Good morning, beloved. 💕 Some moments in public life are so startling in their arrogance that you almost have to rub your eyes to be sure you’re reading reality and not satire.
This is one of those moments.
Recently, eyewitnesses in downtown Washington, D.C., confirmed that Architecture Agency has now renamed the United States Institute of Peace—a towering symbol of global diplomacy, scholarship, and American moral leadership—to the:
“Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.” Yes, his name is now emblazoned across multiple sides of the building—letters so large and proud that even the sun seems embarrassed to shine on them. Photos obtained by The Washington Post show the newly affixed signage sparkling across a structure that was never intended to honor any single political figure, let alone one who has spent years mocking the very principles of peacemaking.
Truthfully, you could not make this arrogance up.
A Pattern of Historical Disrespect This is not a one-off act, nor an impulsive moment of vanity. It is a pattern—a deliberate, almost compulsive effort by President Trump to overwrite America’s history, heritage, and symbolism with his own name and narrative.
Over the past several months, we have watched the same storyline unfold:
Historic buildings renamed.
Federal facilities retitled.
Geographic regions suddenly rebranded.
Longstanding public institutions repainted with one man’s identity.
This is not leadership. This is not patriotism. This is not presidential.
It is something else entirely: a sweeping effort to replace American history with Trumpian mythology.
Every democracy must guard itself against leaders who attempt to recast national identity around themselves. History has shown us—across continents and centuries—that the road from vanity politics to authoritarian symbolism is shorter than most citizens realize.
America’s Landmarks Are Not Vanity Props Our historic sites belong to the American people, not to the ego of any sitting president.
The U.S. Institute of Peace was created by Congress to serve the nation’s highest calling—resolving conflict, building dialogue, and advancing diplomacy. Its mission is rooted in humility, scholarship, sacrifice, and the belief that peace is both possible and worth pursuing.
To rename such a place after oneself… to take a sacred symbol of national values and make it a billboard for personal glorification… is an act that reveals the heart of the decision-maker far more than it honors the institution.
This is not strength. This is insecurity dressed as grandeur. This is self-promotion masquerading as leadership.
And it cheapens us all.
The Danger of Rewriting History in Real Time When presidents begin renaming buildings and regions after themselves, it is no longer about preserving legacy—it is about controlling narrative.
By placing his name over landmarks that long predate his presidency, President Trump is attempting to reposition himself not merely as a former leader but as a permanent fixture in America’s historical architecture. If unchecked, this becomes a slow rewriting of what Americans will see, remember, and associate with national identity.
A healthy democracy requires:
Guardrails
Boundaries
And leaders who respect both
What we are seeing today is none of these.
This Must Be Reversed When this presidency ends—and it will—these unilateral renamings must be undone swiftly, respectfully, and completely. Future administrations, Congress, and civic leaders must move to restore:
Original names
Historical integrity
The public’s ownership of public institutions
The People’s House, the People’s Buildings, and the People’s Regions must be returned to the people.
Democracy depends on more than elections; it depends on a culture that refuses to surrender its memory to the vanity of any one individual.
A Closing Word America has survived wars, depressions, pandemics, and internal divisions. What has kept us steady is our collective memory—our shared understanding of who we are and what we stand for.
