The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran Saturday morning after what the Israeli military said was months of “close and joint planning.”  

Iran responded to the attacks by launching an unprecedented wave of strikes toward Israel and US targets across the Middle East. Explosions were reported in a number of countries including the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar.

The United States has carried out acts of war against Iran, following orders issued by Donald J. Trump and implemented through the United States Department of Defense, in coordination with Israel.  

President Trump calls for internal revolt in Iran, a practice long recognized under international law as a violation of state sovereignty and the prohibition on the use of force.  

In public remarks circulated via official channels, the Secretary of Defense addressed the Iranian government, the Iranian people, and the United States Congress, characterizing these military actions as necessary while bypassing a formal congressional declaration or authorization of war. Under the U.S. Constitution, the power to declare war rests with Congress; unilateral executive escalation into hostilities raises profound questions of legality, separation of powers, and accountability.  

The administration’s stated posture goes further—explicitly urging the Iranian people to rise against their own military and compelling Iran’s government to submit to the strategic objectives of Trump's White House and Tel Aviv. Such exhortations amount to an external call for internal revolt, a practice long recognized under international law as a violation of state sovereignty and the prohibition on the use of force, particularly when paired with kinetic military strikes.  

The human cost is not abstract. Reports emerging from Iranian communities describe civilian casualties, including the deaths of schoolchildren—little girls killed in what should have been protected civilian spaces. These facts intensify the legal scrutiny: the principles of distinction and proportionality under the laws of armed conflict strictly forbid attacks that harm civilians and non-combatants.  

Absent congressional authorization, absent a clear claim of self-defense meeting the threshold of immediacy, and in the presence of civilian harm, the actions ordered by President Trump constitute a grave escalation with potential exposure to domestic constitutional challenge and international legal condemnation.  

This is not a debate over policy preference; it is a question of lawful authority, constitutional duty, and the protection of civilian life.
